Trip Report

Mount Aix

Challenging trek to the top of a not very frequently visited peak.

  • Mount Aix
  • Scrambling
  • Successful
  • Road rough but passable
  • This was a scramble with the Mazamas, our sister climbing club based in Portland.

All the notes in Mountaineers default route/place description are accurate. The trail is generally in good shape, but there are several fairly short eroding sections along the forest switchbacks that consist of loose sand and pebbles.

We took the climbers boot track off the main trail to the summit. For scrambling I give it a T2. However, I would not take hikers on this route due to abundant steep loose rock underfoot, potential for rockfall, exposure, and risk of serious injury in the event of a slide or fall. I also strongly recommend wearing a helmet for the ascent of the peak itself.  Stats are 12 miles rt/4100' gain. Overall, a wonderful adventure with great companions and beautiful weather.
