Mount Deception

  • Mount Deception
  • Scrambling

P.S. Some extra details:
For Wellesley, to save lots of work use the ridgelet at ~6300’ (South of southern Pt 6490) that parallels the main ridge on its south side. Rejoin the main ridge at ~6100’. We followed the main ridge from ~6100’ out to the summit of Wellesley, then dropped down into the bowl north of the ridge for the trip back before regaining the ridge at the best looking spot. The ridge on the way out has great views, but the bowl back has greatly reduced exposure. Totally a personal preference as relative times will depend on party composition.

When using the Gray Wolf Pass trail to descend Mount Deception, traverse towards Gray Wolf Pass at an elevation between ~5800’ and ~5900’ (as dictated by the vegetation/terrain for the easiest going), then do gradually descending traverse to intersect the trail switchback at ~5700’ (avoids having to go all the way up to Gray Wolf Pass at ~6200’).
