Sauk River: Darrington to Skagit River

A beautiful day on a first class river.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Flow was 3790 on the Sauk near Sauk gauge.   This is a great flow level.  The river is moving along.  Wave trains are hopping.  Nothing is too pushy.

We paddled two sections.  Darlington to Sauk River bridge is Class II-.  Nothing difficult.  But there can be wood on this section.  We passed several dangerous log jams that were easily avoided.

Sauk River Bridge to Old Concrete Rd.  We decided this was Class I+.  There were big wave trains but all obstacles were easily seen and avoided.  Downstream from any difficulty were large slow sections for easy recovery.  This section is below the Suiattle and much wider.  River spanning wood has not been observed.  This section would be fun for capable flatwater paddlers.  Leader permission may be advisable as it is upper end of flatwater remit.
