Sea Kayak - Mercer Island

  • Winds held fairly steady at around 7 to 8 knots, clocking around as forecast from SSE to SSW over the course of the paddle.  Temps in the high 50’s to mid 60’s.  Waves typically < 1ft with occasional boat wakes.  Note that Groveland Beach Park is closed and landing there will not be possible until construction work there is completed.

Good trip.  What started out as a straightforward 12 nm trip turned into 14.6 nm due to the complete closure of the waterfront at Groveland Beach Park. Not to be deterred, we swung west to Seward Park for lunch then continued on around Mercer. Despite the longer route, we easily finished at the forecast time of 3:05pm. Lessons re-learned: always check in advance to make sure landing sites will be open, even if you’ve made the trip many times before; a waxed boat wants to slide back into the water.
