We launched from Cornet Bay under perfect conditions, setting off with clear skies and calm water. Our route took us clockwise around the west end of Ben Ure Island, where we caught the flood tide for a smooth ride to Hoypus Point. The current gave us a nice assist, and for a time, we were moving at about 6 knots, a combination of our casual paddling speed and the approximately 4.3-knot current flowing out of Deception Pass.

As we navigated through the waters between Ben Ure and Strawberry Island, we encountered manageable boils and tide rips but nothing that posed a challenge. The slingshot effect from the current was exhilarating. Passing Hoypus Point, we saw the remnants of the old ferry and soon had Kiket, Skagit, and Hope Islands in view. We used landmarks to create a forward range and paddled directly to the north side of Skagit Island for a short break.

Afterward, we headed south toward the east end of Hope Island. Along the rocky shore, we took the opportunity to practice boat control techniques, fine-tuning our maneuvering skills before rounding the island to its southern side. Duncan led a fun round of bow dipping practice to cool off the group, a refreshing break before lunch.

Post-lunch, we continued to the west end of Hope Island and set our sights on the north end of Ala Spit. Again, we used forward ranges, aiming off to maintain a straight line during the crossing. A quick on the water break at Ala Spit, and then we were back in the flow, riding the flood current up to Hoypus Point. The current gave us a relaxed pace of about 3.5 knots—no effort required, just smooth paddling.

While rounding Hoypus Point, the current assist diminished, but with the stunning weather, we enjoyed clear views of the Deception Pass Bridge on our return to Cornet Bay. It was a fantastic day on the water, with great conditions, camaraderie, and plenty of practice opportunities.
