Trip Report

Winter Scramble - Baldy (Olympics)

Excellent strenuous winter scramble with minimal avalanche exposure

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Road was clear of  snow and easy to naviagte with AWD.

The creek crossing near the TH was a little more exciting than normal with the higher water level, but everyone kept their feet dry. First snow was at 4,000 ft and by 5,000 ft snowshoes made travel easier. We took the ridge all the way to the false summit and avoided the summer route that goes to climbers right under the avalanche slope below the false summit. Wind was 40-50 mph past the small tree grove of the false summit to the summit. There was no wind below the false summit and a mile of high wind gave it an adventurous feel. The traverse to Tyler looked pretty scoured and avalanche safe. Photos from Tanna Knouse
