Winter Scramble - Mount Washington, Change Peak & Greenway Mountain

Loop scramble of Washington, Greenway, and Change peaks.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • The trail up Mt Washington is still just as rough as always on the lower section.   Lots of water on the trail from recent rains and melting snow.

We started at 7:45am from the parking lot and had a wet, but snow free trail about 2/3 of the way to the top of Mt Washington.  The summit was JUST in the clouds so we arrived to no views when on the true summit of Washington.  Due to the cold and windy conditions we quickly moved on to Greenway Peak.

From Mt Washington we followed the ridge down to the SE and hit the logging road that runs the crest on the boarder of the watershed.  Following this road took us to just below Greenway and a short 10-200' gain scramble obtained the summit.  We went up just before the road bends around to the north past Greenway.  Short and steep off the road but ice axes were not needed.

We then backtracked to the road intersection that runs to the east of Change and followed it to where it meets the base of the ridge forming Change.  There is a well maintained trail to the summit of Change that was easy to follow, even in the snow.  From the top of Change we elected to continue to run the ridge north for a gradual descent to the old logging road and followed the trail back out to the main Mt Washington trail and back to the cars.

Our GPS tracks all agreed it was 13 miles and 3800 feet of gain, definitely more than what the trip lists as the official distance and gain.

We brought snowshoes, micro spikes, and Ice axe and used none of them the entire trip.  With a bit more snow the snowshoes would have been very useful.
