Trip Report

Winter Scramble - Sourdough Mountain (winter)

Great weather and a great group

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • There was a solid trail all the way to the Stettale / Sourdough ridge, thanks to two other groups on the mountain. At that point, their tracks headed SE towards Sourdough, and we headed NW towards 6308'

Snow was patchy and icy during the first 300'. Around 4000' we put on snowshoes.

At the narrow point around 5600', we removed snowshoes and used axes to ascend the short steep section. Thanks to reasonable snow conditions and good steps from a previous group, this was relatively easy.

Once we reached the Sourdough / Stetattle ridge,  we started easy trail breaking in ~6" of powder on top of a supportive crust to 6308'

Perfect weather, great views of the North Cascades, easy snowshoeing and a great group.  Started around 8:15am, back at the cars around 5:45pm, 9.5 hours round trip.
