10 ESSENTIALS: QUESTIONS
HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE MOUNTAINEERS?
In early January this year, I went snowshoeing with some friends and they all raved about The Mountaineers. Even though I've lived here since 2000 and have done lots of hiking and cycling, I never considered joining. After hearing of all the Mountaineer benefits and experiences from my snowshoeing buddies, I decided to (finally) join The Mountaineers!
WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO GET OUTSIDE WITH US?
Growing up in the prairie of the Midwest, I didn't have the opportunities to explore old-growth forests or alpine peaks. Yes - Illinois has an "outside", though sprawling corn fields as far as the eye can see in every direction are not very inspiring for me. When I'm outside in the Northwest, I get a feel for the power of nature - and an escape from the daily grind. I recently read the book "Hidden Life of Trees" and I really do believe that forests can be very positive for human health! I've lately been interested in bird-watching and identifying birds by sight and sound - so this is an additional motivation to get outside.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE MOUNTAINEERS MEMORY?
While my Mountaineers experiences have been limited - since January 2018 - I have had three fun backpacking trips - all in the Cascades. I'd say my favorite memory, so far, was listening to ghost stories around the non-camp fire in a beautiful area near Iron Peak.
WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
I am inspired by seeing the majesty and wonder of this beautiful part of the world we call Upper Left USA. Each day I drive or bike to work from Seattle to the Eastside when the Mountain is out, I can't help but gaze at it and remind myself how lucky I am to be living here!
WHAT DOES ADVENTURE MEAN TO YOU?
Adventure is taking on new experiences outside of the ordinary - whether it is backpacking in the North Cascades (my favorite area in this state!), riding my bike from Seattle to Portland, solo traveling to another part of the world, or even eating unique new foods. Adventure is pushing my boundaries - a bit - to see and experience new things.
LIGHTNING ROUND
If you could be a rock star at any outdoor activity overnight, what would it be? Mountain climbing.
