10 Essentials: Questions
How did you get involved with The Mountaineers?
While I had lift skied for many years, during a winter camp at Reflection Lake I saw ski tracks at Castle Saddle in the Tatoosh Range. It looked like fun, and The Mountaineers offered a chance to do it, so I rejoined The Mountaineers to take the ski mountaineering course.
What motivates you to get outside with us?
Skiing, backpacking, hiking, and scrambling with old and new friends to old and new places. Also, leading trips provides me a chance to give back for all I've received over the years.
What's your favorite Mountaineers memory?
There've been many, but here's a few: (1) After a 26 mile hike in, swimming in Lake LaCrosse in the Olympics and watching a black bear grazing blueberries on the far side of the lake, (2) Skiing in 30" of 5% water content powder during a week hut stay near Blue River, BC, (3) Skiing down Mt. Baker's Roman Wall in near-perfect spring corn with my son Peter on a trip led by Chris and Radka Chapin.
Who/What inspires you?
Those who have led me to new places and experiences, and the chance to do the same for others.
What does adventure mean to you?
Going to new places (preferably by skis) with friends, manageable challenge, and away from crowds.
Lightning Round
What's your 11th essential? My skis! (all 8 pairs; is it time to downsize?)
