10 Essentials: Questions

How did you get involved with The Mountaineers?

Several generations in my family have been Mountaineers. I didn’t really consider joining until I got in over my head on a “hike” and discovered I wanted more scrambling skills. Now I can’t imagine not being part of this awesome group.

What motivates you to get outside with us?

Going out into new places with knowledgeable individuals. Meeting people and getting to hear their stories. Signing up for trips and events gives me something new to look forward to.

What's your favorite Mountaineers memory?

I was leading a hike on Mt. Si and someone in the group pointed out that it was a nice way to spend Earth Day. I hadn’t realized what day it was when I scheduled the hike so that was a neat surprise! A few of us wished others on the trail “Happy Earth Day!” and before long we were saying it to every single person we saw. A lot of people smiled, some laughed, and we got a lot of greetings back. I think one of the hikers in our group was a little annoyed, but he was a good sport about it. We had a lot of fun that day and connected with other hikers on the trail. I loved it!

Who/What inspires you?

My mom, specifically in how she always thinks of others and does a lot of service work. She’s been a role model my whole life and inspires me to volunteer and help others. People who speak openly about mental illness and things like anxiety and depression - they are so brave and inspire me to look beyond labels and assumptions. Anyone who confronts stigma and helps us connect and communicate is amazing. As for “what” inspires me, that would be experiencing beautiful moments, exploring new places, and feelings of freedom and adrenaline. Really anything that heightens the senses and reminds you how awesome life is - that’s what inspires me to seek out new adventures.

What does adventure mean to you?

Doing something where these is an element of the unknown. A road trip where you follow interesting signs to places you’ve never been is an adventure. Climbing your first mountain and not knowing what it feels like to stand on a summit is an adventure. Going out for a meal with friends and trying cuisine you’ve never had before can also be an adventure. Adventure doesn’t have a scale or time requirement. It’s going outside of your comfort zone or your familiar areas and experiencing something new for you.
