10 Essentials: Questions

How did you get involved with The Mountaineers?

I met friends in Seattle for a birthday celebration where we went to a concert at The Showbox. In catching up, a few friends were considering the Basic Alpine course that fall. I liked the sound of the challenges, the adventures, and new experiences with great people and signed up the next morning.

What motivates you to Get outside with us?

I love melting snow (ha). The first motivator was to have the opportunity and skill to go farther and higher (in as safe and measured way possible). I already loved the outdoors, but with The Mountaineers I can broaden my appreciation of nature in additional ways. The people are what make The Mountaineers great. My instructors, mentors, and the other students, are some of the reasons I continue to come back and stay involved.

What's your favorite Mountaineers memory?

Setting up camp at Camp Curtis in a graupel storm with 35mph winds. We had the wind and graupel hitting us in the face through the tent walls for hours and hours. It was tent-bending winds and I didn’t figure we would get any sleep. The next morning was the most serene vanilla sky sunrise. The most peace I’ve felt.

Who/What inspires you?

Challenges and lessons inspire me, along with a few of my favorite Mountaineers - Debbie Straub, William Kenneweg, and Steve Anderson.

What does adventure mean to you?

Expectation of being tested with a dash of uncertainty and a splash of the unknown, with the intention to be open and learn. Adventure doesn’t always equate to the end goal - sometimes it is everything lovely and spicy in between.
