For our member profile this week we talked to Tess Wendel, a Basic grad and Intermediate student who can eat a surprising amount of Phad Thai after a weekend in the mountains.
10 Essential Questions
How did you get involved with The Mountaineers?
I was looking for a job that involved the outdoors - I had no idea what kind of great things I would be getting into!
What motivates you to get outside with us?
Getting outside with The Mountaineers is fun, keeps me in good shape, and I get to visit some places off the beaten path that I wouldn't normally feel comfortable exploring on my own.
What's your favorite Mountaineers memory?
Well there are so many... Unicorn Peak was the first peak I summited for Basic and it was only 6 months post surgery so that felt pretty awesome knowing what I could achieve if I put my mind to it. The group was super supportive and the glissade was great (the road walk on Stevens Canyon Rd was... not so great).
I have also loved the campouts after the intermediate rock field trips with my mentor group last year.
Who/What inspires you?
The Mountaineers community in general is a pretty inspirational group. It's hard to swing a helmet without hitting inspiration.
What does adventure mean to you?
Adventure means planning for the best, expecting the worst, and usually running into something you weren't prepared for. It often includes Type II fun. And the best adventures happen with your friends or end up creating new lasting friendships.
