10 Essential Questions

How did you get involved with The Mountaineers?

As a professional Bird Tour Leader, I lead specialist birdwatching and nature tours in Asia and Australia. My area of expertise is South East Asia and Japan, in particular. So I take small groups of birders and naturalists to countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia (Borneo), Vietnam, Cambodia and others on two to three week tours. We spend our days from dawn to dusk, and often later, on the trails in wildlife rich areas. I’m a trained biologist and the author of the Field Guide to the Birds of Borneo. I’m super lucky to be able to travel, naturalize and be outdoors most days of my working life.  I was looking for a hiking group to join in my not-working time, and found you guys as the best in Seattle!

What motivates you to get outside with us?

A professional approach, great leaders, and friendly and like-minded people.

Favorite Mountaineers memory?

The great locations for activities and good company, the single best so far has been to see the wildflowers in spring here. One of my favorite hikes was to Skyline Divide with a fun group and stunning vistas. Amazing! I also love the forests here in the PNW so just about anywhere is memorable for me. It seems like every hike or backpacking trip is my new favorite!

Who/What inspires you?

Nature and wildlife - it's all you need.

What does adventure mean to you?

New discoveries - from a tiny insect I've never seen before to an amazing natural landscape. I don't need to conquer nature, I just want to be in it, learning, observing.

Lightning Round

Sunrise or sunset? Both, that's why I backpack.
Superpower? Annie Oakley eyesight.
Smile or game face? Either, depends on my mood.
Post-adventure meal of choice? Beer.
If you could be a rock star at any outdoor activity overnight, what would it be? Wildlife whisperer.
