10 Essentials: Questions
How did you get involved with The Mountaineers?
I joined the club to take the Conditioning Hiking Series (then in its second year). I was in over my head, but the hike leaders didn't give up on me and I graduated! I've been involved with CHS ever since, first as a hike leader and later as course administrator.
What motivates you to get outside with us?
As a leader it is so gratifying to take a group somewhere they haven't been before! And I've made lifelong friends through the club.
What's your favorite Mountaineers memory?
My CHS graduation hike was Around Mother Mountain led by Karen Sykes. Our birthdays were within a couple weeks of each other, but she hated celebrating hers on the actual date. So on that hike was born our tradition of "Un-Birthday Hikes." We strolled though Spray Park with birthday party hats, lots of laughter, and cheers from hikers we met along the way!
Who/What inspires you?
I'm inspired by other Mountaineers members and leaders who so generously volunteer their time and talents! I value the "learn one, do one, teach one" ethic.
What does adventure mean to you?
Safely pushing out the edges of my comfort zone to explore the outdoors.
Lightning Round
Sunrise or sunset? Sunset.
Smile or game face? Smile.
What's your 11th essential? Liner-weight toe socks.
What's your post-adventure meal of choice? A burger and a beer.
If you could be a rock star at any outdoor activity overnight, what would it be? Downhill skiing. People who do it well make it look so effortless!
