Let’s break down these numbers.
Last year, 165 adults and 65 families with children benefited from donor-funded scholarships. Mountaineers at all seven branches were awarded scholarships and used them to access almost every activity - from paddling to canyoning to urban walking to climbing.
All said and done, $106,719 was deployed from our scholarship fund to reduce financial barriers to outdoor education and community. About one third of this was used to help youth access outdoor experiences.
And the need is increasing. Over the last two years, the number of people applying for scholarships at The Mountaineers has increased by 78%. Sharing outdoor experiences despite financial barriers strengthens our bonds and makes The Mountaineers a vibrant community where everyone can find belonging.
We need to raise $40,000 for this scholarship fund by midnight tonight. In an incredible gesture of generosity, the family of Jeff Bowman has offered to match up to $20,000 in Giving Tuesday donations.
This is the number that matters right now: $8,200.
In the next eight hours, we need to raise $8,200 to meet our Giving Tuesday goal. So far 42 Mountaineers members and donors have made a Giving Tuesday donation. Will you join them? Your gift of any amount will make a difference for someone in our community.
