Backpack for eight days far off the beaten track across the Andes through Argentina’s 'Switzerland'. Join us to explore Nahuel Huapi National Park in northern Patagonia as part of a Mountaineers Global Adventures trip in Feburary 2021. It'll be winter here, but you can enjoy the sunshine of the summer in the southern hemisphere!
Backpack Bariloche to Tronador - Feb 14-24
Starting at the adventure hub of Bariloche, Argentina, we'll wander high ridges under craggy peaks. We'll enjoy 360-degree panoramas over dozens of glacial lakes circled by granite domes and rainforest with 3,000-year-old Alerce trees.
Carrying overnight gear, we'll camp beside remote lakes that Andean guides consider their personal ‘secret’ favorites. You'll walk up the flanks of the massive Tronador volcano, with glaciers pouring their meltwater over innumerable waterfalls, to watch stunning sunsets with a glass of wine from two cozy mountain huts. Then we'll descend to catch a ferry on the famed Cruce Andino (Andes Crossing) route through the high mountains on Lago Nahuel Huapi back to Bariloche.
Explore Volcanoes, Rainforests, and Hot Springs - Feb 25-Mar 4
If you can to extend your trip with us, you can hop on a different ferry to Lago Todos Santos into Chile. Or, if you can only join us for the second leg of the trip, fly into the pretty coastal town of Puerto Montt. Over the next 6 days, join us to hike high on three of the distinctive volcanoes of Chile’s Lakes District: Osorno, Casablanca, and Quetrupillan. Enjoy vast views across the innumerable lakes of this stunning region and the other signature volcanoes including Villarica, Lanin, and Puntiagudo. Between your volcano hikes, experience two of the most famous natural thermal areas in the region: Thermas de Puyehue and Thermas Geometricas with its seven hot pools deep in the rainforest. Boardwalks pass between them! We’ll also hike through unique Araucaria forest in the El Cañi Nature Reserve to a high viewpoint with a spectacular 360-degree view of the region’s many lakes and four more volcanoes!
This is the land of the Mapuche People and one of the nights we’ll be treated to a traditional Mapuche barbeque dinner prepared at the home of a local family. We’ll be in hotels or cabins every night, so you need only carry a daypack.
