Freedom 10 Kickoff Party at REI - 9/23
On Monday, September 23 we’ll gather at the REI Seattle Flagship store from 5-8pm for our official kickoff party. Get a first look at the 10th edition and meet with Freedom10 contributors including Allison Taylor, Steve Swenson, Peter Hendrickson, Daniel Greenfield, and Eric Linxweiler. Activities include:

At the kickoff, you’ll have an opportunity to win prizes from The Mountaineers and REI Co-op with “Freedom-themed” activities, challenges, and more. Tickets include food from Paella House and beverages from our sponsors.

Freedom 10 Deep Dive - 9/26
The celebration continues Thursday, September 26 from 5-9pm at The Mountaineers Seattle Program Center with a Deep Dive event featuring many of our 10th edition’s contributors, including Eric Linxweiler, Steve Swenson, Nathan Foster, Bill Ashby, Takeo Kuraishi, Steve McClure, and Peter Tran.
The Deep Dive event will include presentations, demonstrations, and a round-robin-style demo classroom discussing Freedom's new and updated elements. Enjoy a meet-and-greet, food, beverages, and book signing, followed by a short speaking program. Sessions include:
- Knots & Ropes. Update your essential knowledge for all mountain sport activities by learning how to choose one knot or system over another.
- Climbing Self Rescue. Learn new techniques in crevasse self rescue and compare traditional methods to newer equipment.
- Mountaineering. Learn how to use updated gear items, including spike traction devices, crampons, and ice axes, and hear important new UIAA and AMGA recommendations around mountaineering education and risk management.
- Navigation. Thanks to compasses, cell phones, navigation electronics, and mapping apps, there are many options for navigating in the outdoors. Learn what's new in navigation, the five essential tools you still need, and why paper maps and magnetic compasses may never disappear completely.
- Safety. Learn how to safely explore in the outdoors, from reporting incidents and accidents to safety updates to protocols and risk management.
