The Mountaineers Seattle Climbing Committee is excited to host two socials in November: one for the BIPOC community and another for those who identify as women or non-binary.

A BIPOC Community Conversation | November 11, 2024

This new event is specifically for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color climbers and aims to create a dedicated space for this community within The Mountaineers. Meet fellow climbers, build connections, and discuss how we can make The Mountaineers an even more welcoming and inclusive organization for everyone.

Why are these socials important?

  • Building Community: Climbing can sometimes feel like an individual pursuit, but these socials emphasize the power of community. They provide a platform for climbers from diverse backgrounds to connect, support each other, and foster a sense of belonging.
  • Breaking Down Barriers: Historically marginalized groups often face additional challenges in accessing outdoor spaces and activities. These socials help break down those barriers by creating a welcoming and supportive environment.
  • Shaping the Future: By bringing together diverse voices and perspectives, these socials help shape the future of climbing within The Mountaineers. They offer a chance to discuss how we can improve our programs, trips, and courses to be more inclusive and accessible to all.

How can these socials lead to change?

  • Increased Representation: By fostering a sense of community and belonging, these socials encourage more people from underrepresented groups to participate in climbing activities. This, in turn, leads to greater diversity within our leadership, instructors, and trip leaders.
  • Curriculum Development: Feedback from these socials inform the development of new courses and programs that cater to the specific needs and interests of diverse communities.
  • Mentorship and Support: These events facilitate mentorship opportunities, connecting experienced climbers with those who are new to the sport or seeking to improve their skills.

What can you gain?

  • New Friendships: Connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for climbing.
  • Inspiration and Motivation: Hear stories from other climbers, learn about new climbing areas, and get inspired for your next adventure.
  • Leadership Opportunities: Get involved in shaping the future of climbing within The Mountaineers and help create a more inclusive and welcoming community.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the joy and challenge of climbing. Join us at these upcoming socials and be a part of building a more inclusive and welcoming climbing community!
