Meet Our Parks | Your Adventure's Tom Vogl. Together with his oldest son, James, he will do a one day climb of Mt. Shuksan's Fisher Chimneys.
his adventure
Tom is set out to complete a one day climb of Mt Shuksan’s Fisher Chimneys with his oldest son, James. James is a budding mountaineer and this climb has been on their target list for a few years. On August 29, their goal is to do this climb as a big, one day push. This climb is typically done in 2 or 3 days, but can be done fast and light in a day.
Mt. Shuksan is in the heart of North Cascades National Park - one of Tom's favorite places in the world. "It's some of the most pristine wilderness in the lower 48 states, and is both an amazing ecosystem and has amazing places to hike and climb," he says. "There are many amazing National Parks but North Cascades is my personal favorite."
why it matters
Tom will be raising $2,500 in support of The Mountaineers Youth Programs.
Mt. Shuksan is special to Tom because he last climbed it with Doug Walker, a local conservationist and philanthropist who passed away on New Year’s Eve. "Doug was a friend, climbing partner and mentor and I miss him greatly," says Tom. "My son James’ first alpine climb was with Doug so doing Fisher Chimneys seems a fitting remembrance climb in his honor."
