10 ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS

WHAT FIRST BROUGHT YOU TO THE MOUNTAINEERS?

We belonged to The Mountaineers when the boys were little but their activities became more prominent in our lives. I rejoined when my obligations with the kids and our elders were completed, and I wanted to do something for myself. I have always loved the outdoors and decided now or never!

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS A VOLUNTEER?

I first started with the backpacking course and wanted to share my knowledge and help other members find beauty, freedom, and serenity being in nature.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOUNTAINEERS MEMORY?

I have many favorite moments, but what stands out in my adventures - locally and globally - is sharing an early morning coffee with the "Coffee Club," enjoying the quiet day break with my cohorts.

WHAT IS ONE THING YOU DO AS A LEADER TO MAKE YOUR PARTICIPANTS FEEL WELCOME?

I try to listen and figure out where the participants are coming from. It's sometimes difficult to understand when what the person is experiencing is unfamiliar to you. But being empathetic and just listening with care is all you need to provide. It is best if the participants can figure out what they need or want on their own with your guidance.

Have you supported The Mountaineers with a donation? What impact do you hope to have in our community through your donations?

I try to donate at the level I can. Another way to support.

LIGHTNING ROUND

What's your favorite close-to-home adventure? Anywhere going up
What's you 11th Essential? A welcome mat for my tent
Post-trip meal or go-to place of choice? Onion rings and salad
What's next on your bucket list? More global traveling to new places
If you could be adept at any outdoor activity overnight, what would it be? Canyoneering

NOMINATE YOURSELF FOR MOUNTAINEER OF THE WEEK

Mountaineers volunteers come in all shapes and sizes, varying widely in age, outdoor experience, and length of time involved in The Mountaineers. Part of what makes our community so unique is the broad diversity of our leadership, and we hope these weekly features highlight how our trip leaders, course instructors, and committee and branch officers support our community. We are always seeking self-nominations for our Mountaineer of the Week, and we invite you to share your story. Trust us, we want to hear from you!
