Sailing Kickoff & Basic Crewing Course - Begins March 21

Let’s go sailing! The Mountaineers sailing program is gearing up for another fantastic year of day sails, raft-ups, overnights, and racing. Offered once a year, our sailing course is your chance to develop a skill-set that allows you to explore our local waterways. Ready for a change of scenery? You’ll experience the thrill of the wind in your face as the boat glides through the water, a calm of a downwind sail surrounded by an orange sunset, and so much more.

Sailing on Puget Sound is invigorating and peaceful, thrilling and quiet, physical and calm. Sailing connects you to nature, tests your endurance, teaches patience, and shows you the region from a completely different perspective. And The Mountaineers sailing program offers a unique benefit:  completion of the course qualifies participants to sail on skipper-owned boats for free!

Not ready to fully commit to the course? Join us for an afternoon of sailing at the Seattle Sailing Kick-Off to see if this sport is for you. See you on the water!

Seattle Sailing Kick-Off: Saturday, March 21

Join one of six Mountaineers skippers for an afternoon kick-off sail on Saturday, March 21. No previous sailing experience is necessary! Experience the thrill of sailing on Puget Sound as you raise and trim sails, tack/jibe, take a turn at the helm, and meet other Mountaineers. Once you register for the event, you will be assigned to a skipper-owned boat. Boats will leave from either Shilshole Bay Marina, Elliott Bay Marina, or Lake Washington. Individual skippers will reach out with more information on what to bring, what to wear, and where to meet. Enjoy the thrill of being on the water!

Kick Off

Basic Crew and Sailing Course: March 31 - April 8

Let’s get on the water! Learn from experienced skippers on how to raise sails, tack and jibe, trim sails, tie knots, and be safe on the water. Offered just once per year, The Basic Crew and Sailing Course includes four in-class sessions on Tuesday nights, practical hands-on learning during the class sessions, line to practice knots, the US Sailing book Basic Keelboat, one At-The-Dock session, and two training sails occurring in May and June. The course begins Tuesday, March 31 and ends April 28. Note that there is no class on April 14 as students will complete their At-The-Dock session on skipper boats. Completion of the course puts you on the crew list for Mountaineers sails on skipper-owned boats for free! Register today - spots are going fast!
