As someone who’s volunteered with The Mountaineers more than 100 times over the last three years, perhaps it’s most appropriate to think of Krishna Dase (KD) as a Super-Duper Volunteer. Since joining in 2016, KD has supported backpacking, climbing, scrambling, snowshoeing, navigation, and hiking courses across nearly all branches. He’s a snowshoe and scrambling trip leader, intermediate climbing student, Everett climbing committee member, Kitsap scrambling committee member, and Seattle hiking committee member. He’s also a Mountaineers scholarship recipient.
“I appreciate Mountaineers donors who make it possible for people like me to receive scholarships. Through the courses I’ve taken, I’ve learned important technical skills, but I’ve also learned to make decisions as a group and promote safety in various terrains.
"This year, I received a scholarship to take the Wilderness First Responder and Alpine Ice courses. I’m working my way toward becoming a climb leader, and these courses will help better prepare me for that new role at The Mountaineers.
"I choose to volunteer so much of my time with The Mountaineers because I want to give back to our community. I love teaching new students the same skills that bring me so much joy outdoors, and ensuring they can recreate safely. Scholarships have supported me personally, but it’s important to extend that support by helping many others at The Mountaineers."
Scholarships provide influential access to outdoor recreation and serve as a catalyst for positive change within our organization. The ripple effect of just one scholarship has the power to positively impact hundreds of lives, which ultimately benefits everyone in our community.
The Mountaineers scholarship program serves all branches and is entirely supported by charitable donations. You can extend the reach of our volunteer-led education programs by making a gift in support of scholarships today!
Today is #GivingTuesday, and Facebook has pledged to match up to $7 million in donations made through Facebook. We’re asking for your help to raise $25,000 to provide scholarships to 75 students. This ensures that life-changing Mountaineers opportunities are available to all. Would you join us to meet the challenge?
Anyone can start a social media fundraiser today, but matches will only be made on December 3.
