Mountaineers Books
Mountaineers Books was started by volunteers in 1960 in order to formalize The Mountaineers climbing education into one text, which was then, as now, Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills, the world's best-selling instructional book on this topic.
In quick succession, the Publishing Committee, headed by Harvey Manning, also produced trails guidebooks for Washington. Today, The Mountaineers publishing division has some 700 titles in print, which are sold around the world. A professional staff produces about 35 new books each year on outdoor recreation, lifestyle, and conservation topics. Recreation titles are published under the Mountaineers Books trademark, while outdoor lifestyle titles are produced in the Skipstone imprint, and conservation titles are published by Braided River.
Mountaineers Books distributes it's own titles to bookstores, parks, outdoor retailers and other outlets, and distributes for other nonprofit outdoor organizations, as well. Currently, the publisher distributes the books of the Colorado Mountain Club, the American Alpine Club, and the Adventure Cycling Association.
Braided River is a unique conservation advocacy imprint, working with other organizations to protect wild places. In addition to affecting photo-driven books, Braided River sponsors educational outreach and museum exhibits to make the public aware of endangered lands and species.
Mountaineers Books is all about the outdoors -- education, inspiration, and stewardship!
