Introduction to Winter/Mixed climbing is designed to teach the fundamental skills required to safely lead climb during the winter months on routes consisting of rock and ice. Instruction includes use of ice tools and crampons on rock, proper selection and placement of protection, anchor building and rappelling. To the extent practical, students will be allowed to progress at their own pace. Course graduates are eligible to participate in Intermediate Winter Climbs. The course consists of 1 day and 1 weekend field trip.
ELIGIBILITY: The course is open to any Mountaineers Club member who is either an Intermediate Glacier Course graduate, a Leading on Rock (Sport) graduate or student, and an Alpine Ice graduate. Selection of applicants will be at the discretion of the committee members.
This course also gives the Student a chance to set up and execute a forced emergency bivy using only the items carried on a winter day climb. The bivy will occur within the campground.

Ice axe, Ice tools (if you own them) - Club will provide two tools - Instructors may share tools
File (if you own one) - fine mill bastard cut for sharpening tools and crampons
Pitons (if you own them, but do not purchase)
Winter Bivy:
The winter bivy Saturday night is intended to simulate an emergency overnight using only the clothing and equipment you normally carry on a day climb or scramble. Do not purchase additional gear for this portion of the field trip.
