Introduction to Winter/Mixed Climbing

Introduction to Winter/Mixed climbing is designed to teach the fundamental skills required to safely lead climbs during the winter months on routes consisting of rock & ice. Instruction includes the use of ice tools & crampons on rock, proper selection & placement of protection, anchor building & rappelling. To the extent practical, students will be allowed to progress at their own pace. Course graduates, with completion of LOR, are eligible to participate in Intermediate Winter Climbs.

The course consists of 1 evening online zoom session on 1/16, a weekend field trip on 1/25-1/26 Leavenworth, and a one day field trip on 2/1  at Exit 38 .

ELIGIBILITY: The course is open to any Mountaineers Club member who has graduated the Basic Alpine Course. 

Intermediate students and Everett Branch members will be prioritized during the selection process. Basic graduates with a strong desire to learn top rope dry tooling skills and participate in a winter overnight bivy may apply. All Basic applicants will be heavily vetted and selected by the Course and Intermediate Committee Leadership. Basic Graduates who participate in this course WILL NOT be eligible for intermediate climbs until after successful completion of LOR. 

The selection of applicants will be at the discretion of the committee members.
