Tom Eng
Tom joined the Mountaineers in 2017 to expand his outdoor knowledge and to connect with others who share his passion for the outdoors. Tom serves as an At-Large Branch Council Member and is also a member of seven activity committees. In addition, he is currently a trip leader for hiking, trail running, backpacking, snowshoeing, photography, and urban walks. He leads trips in a variety of interest areas and often integrates mindfulness activities in his outings. He has been a Super Volunteer and Key Leader for the past five years.
Tom was a veterinarian, epidemiologist, and tech startup founder and CEO before retiring early. Growing up in the inner city in New York City, he didn't experience the wilderness until he was an adult. As a result, he developed a deep appreciation for the natural world and is forever grateful to live in the Pacific Northwest. Tom also volunteers for the University of Washington and other organizations involved in public health, mycology, fly fishing, and housing insecurity. Don't be surprised if you bump into him foraging for mushrooms in the forest, photographing the night sky on a mountain top, or savoring the perfect pastry at the bakery. When Tom is not outside, he's likely working on a new forest-to-table recipe, learning something new, or planning his next adventure.
