This seminar will be held on zoom, starting at 6:30PM and ending at approx. 8:30PM.   A link to register for the zoom and get your link to join the class will be sent out a week before the session.

This lecture starts with an overview of what backpacking is and what's involved in backpacking in the great PNW backcountry;  and then move on to help students evaluate what their core objectives are for backpacking and how those objectives influence the balance of  comfort at camp with comfort on the trail.  We then review how to select the gear you need based on the type of trip and expected conditions, including how to develop a packing checklist;  the basics of clothing and footwear options for backpacking and how to choose; socks and foot care; hydration and water purification options; and will wrap up with an introduction to the options for your backpacking cook system, food and food preparation.

There will be breakout sessions with your mentor group during the evening where you will have the opportunity to review and discuss some of the core topics that have been discussed.
