This hands-on course, tailored to on-trail adventurers, provides focused information on key skills and tools, and hands-on practice on the trail, to become confident reading a topographic map against the features of the terrain around you, get important information from a compass and altimeter, and maintain a steady awareness of where you are as well as how to find yourself if you get temporarily misplaced.
The course includes an evening online instructional seminar and a field practice day held outdoors at Tiger Mountain State Forest, including a 45-minute map and compass field exercise, a trip planning exercise, and a 3-5 mile hike to apply the skills you learned.
