SKIER-FRIENDLY FIELD TRIP. Practice winter tent camping skills, try out gear, learn hands-on about how to be safe and comfortable camping in the backcountry in winter conditions.

Longmire museum inside Mt. Rainier National Park, 7:45am.  Since parking is limited at Narada Falls carpooling is encouraged. If  we can't all park at Narada Falls then trip leader may relocate trip to the Paradise area. 

All vehicles, including 4WD and AWD vehicles, are required to carry tire chains when entering the park. Nov. 1 - May 1.

This is the skier-friendly/snowboarder-friendly field trip. Please sign up for this trip if you plan to travel on skis or with a splitboard. Our other March 2024 field trip will be snowshoe-only.

We will practice skills discussed in the winter camping lecture, including:

  • site selection
  • how to set up a winter camp
  • cooking food
  • gathering water
  • getting around in winter
  • emergency snow shelter construction practice
