Who's presenting?
Scientists from the Desert Research Institute, a leader in basic and applied environmental research, share how to become a community observer for Mountain Rain or Snow, a NASA-funded, crowdsourced science project that studies winter precipitation. They will also explain key findings from the project’s 35,000+ observations over the past four years.
Why is your participation in this project important?
It is notoriously difficult to research winter precipitation in the mountains. It can vary over minutes and across short distances, and our technology struggles to accurately identify precipitation phase near freezing-- rain, snow, or mixed. Direct observations of winter weather, made by community members using mobile devices help scientists to improve estimates of precipitation phase – an important goal for hazard prediction, daily weather forecasting, and global hydrologic research alike.
