Intermediate Glacier Trip Planning - Mountaineers Kitsap Program Center

We will present trip planning tools and techniques for winter/steep snow or ice travel and terrain analysis. We will study emergency shelters to prepare for building at least one during the first field trip. We will introduce the 6:1 Drop Loop to build on the 3:1 system learned in Basic Alpine Climbing.

Session one will focus on trip planning, winter camping and traveling in avalanche terrain. We will introduce the 6:1 Canadian Drop Loop rescue method later in the session to introduce it so students can practice prior to the second classroom session. 

We will cover: 

- Emergency snow shelters (anticipate building at least one during the first field trip);

- CALTOPO tools for terrain and snow cover analysis that are useful in winter trip planning;

- Equipment useful in winter travel and steeper snow and ice travel conditions;

- AIARE and Parks Canada tools for avalanche terrain analysis;

- Review of cases related to winter and steep snow travel;

  • Harness, crampons, 2 prusiks or VT prusiks, descent control device, 4 locking and 4 non-locking carabiners (all this more important for second classroom session)
  • laptop with CALTOPO website or smart phone with CALTOPO app - free version will do;
  • We will review sections from FOTH 10 on winter mountaineering, steep snow and ice travel and emergency snow shelters.
  • Reading material that will be included in the Course Materials section.
