Summer Backpack Trip - Olympia - 2022

Youth Program

Olympia Summer Camp - Backpack Trip

Backpack Week is here! We will spend Tuesday learning the basics of backpacking before leaving for a 3 day/2 night backpack trip to Dosewallips. We will return on Friday afternoon with stories and adventures to share.

This exciting backcountry backpacking is for campers ages 9-14 and includes a day of in-town preparations and 3 days/ 2 nights backpacking and exploring the on the beautiful and remote North Fork Quinault River that flows into Lake Quinault. No experience is necessary and we can offer assistance with gear.

Tuesday, July 26, 6:30-8:00pm.  Meet for preliminary gear check to help you get ready for a successful trip. This will include parents and kids and be at a location to be determined.  You will be expected to gather the gear you plan to bring and review it with the leaders at this time, getting help in making decisions about personal and group gear.

Tuesday - Tuesday morning of camp you will arrive at camp with your backpack packed for the trip. Although we will not be leaving that day, we will review your gear again and test out our packs with a short hike. We will then prepare our backpacking food to add to our packs along with some special backpacking treats! Some Leave No Trace ethics, Risk Assessment,  and crafts will round out the day.

Wednesday - After final additions and changes to your pack have been made, campers will arrive ready to go with a sack lunch for the drive. En route, campers will visit the giant spruce tree at Lake Quinault and lunch at the trailhead. A beautiful trail travels gently upward 2.5 miles to a large campsite along the gravel bar of the river. Spend the rest of the day setting up camp, learning about water filtration, latrine building, and other backcountry skills, with an evening on the gravel bar star gazing and telling stories.

Thursday - Campers will head out toward a giant washout and dramatic river access point for lunch at 2.7 miles. On the return,  we will pick berries for our cobbler or berry pancake treats! We will also enjoy a campfire before an evening frog hunt and night explore.
Friday morning will be filled with a creative camp breakfast before packing up for the return trip. We will have lunch at the trailhead before exploring one of the short and scenic trails along the northern shore of Lake Quinault.   We will arrive home on Friday around 4:00 with time to share our stories with family and friends.
