This clinic is for graduates of the Basic Waterfall Canyoning Course OR anyone who has prior experience with online mapping tools AND has experience/interest in canyoning.
The goal of this seminar is for participants to be able to use Ropewiki, Caltopo, and Gaia together to anticipate conditions, plan logistics, and communicate the plan to participants and emergency contacts.
The seminar will cover:
- Using key Ropewiki features, including waterflow analysis and trip reports
- Basemap options in Caltopo
- Ways to save, edit, and share your maps in Caltopo
- .gpx and .kml map download and upload
- Drawing routes and catchments in Caltopo
- Snowpack analysis (pro account)
- Transferring maps from Caltopo to Gaia
- Submitting trip reports and updating beta in Ropewiki
This is NOT an introduction to online mapping tools. Waterfall Canyoning graduates MUST review V7 Level 2 Section 3 prior to this seminar. If you have not completed this section in a while, plan to spend 2-3 hours reviewing this section. We will not have time to review the basics of online mapping tools in this seminar, so you must come with that knowledge.
Required Equipment
You will need a computer with wifi as well as your smartphone. We HIGHLY recommend participating with two screens (eg. a laptop screen and a second monitor). If you do not have two screens, MAKE sure you know how to operate in split-screen. You will need to be able to watch a shared screen on zoom while also following along in the platforms we discuss.
