A session for all members of the Mountaineers canyoning program to practice their skills.

Ready to get back into the canyons?  Come join this skills practice session for all members of the Mountaineers canyoning program to practice fundamental and/or intermediate skills in preparation for the 2022 season.

This practice session will be held at the Seattle Program Center on June 13, 2022 from  6 – 8:30 PM.

 The North Plaza will be setup for practicing fundamental skills and the South Plaza will be setup for practicing intermediate skills. Please only participate in skills based on the course/equivalency that you have completed.

Fundamental Skills:

Personal Movement: Ascending, Conversions, Passing Knots

Rigging:

  • EMO, MMO, unlinked bolts
  • Rigging As Anchor Manager: Setting rope length, creeping the rope, rappelling, retrieving
  • Traverse Lines: self-belay and team belay
  • Webbing anchors: water knot, slings, redundant webbing

Intermediate Skills

Rigging

  • Closing a Releasable System Under Tension (MMO, EMO)
  • Rigging and Managing Rebelays
  • Twin Rope Systems (static and releasable)
  • Core shot management
    • Speed Butterfly
  • Top Belays
  • Guided Rappels (conveyer belt)

Personal Movement

  • Double Rope Movement: Ascending, Conversions, Passing Knots
  • Ascend a Steep Traverse Line w/Mechanical Ascender
  • Quick release ascending system

Self-Rescue

  • “Rapid Conversion Ascending System” w/Italian 8 & VT prusik

Indirect Rescue

  • Convert to a Lower: Static Block or Stuck Releasable Block
  • Convert to a Haul: Blocked Static System / Releasable System
  • Lowering a Knot Past an Anchor
  • Rope Cutting

Direct Rescue

  • Pickoff Strap w/VT Prusik & PCP (incapable subject)

Anchors

  • Cairn Anchors

 What to Bring: Your personal canyoning equipment, jacket & other warm layers,  headlamp, dinner/snacks to share (optional).  Additional canyoning equipment from the Mountaineers will be available to loan out for the day.  Please reach out in advance if you need to borrow any equipment.

Technical Practice Sessions typically include targeted skills designated by the leader(s) as well as space for participants to practice their choice of technical skills. 

Technical Practice Sessions are a peer learning environment. No formal training is provided, and participants must have the pre-requisite training to participate. Participants are encouraged to bring books or materials to reference.
