This course is designed to invite qualified mountaineers and climbers to apply for our Basic Equivalency evaluation with The Mountaineers. This program is designed for experienced climbers who have developed their skills through other recognized organizations or professional guide services and wish to participate in The Mountaineers' climbing activities, including Basic Level Climbs, Club Climbs, Climbing Seminars, and continue their skills through the Intermediate Climbing Course.
Eligibility
To be eligible for consideration, candidates must demonstrate substantial climbing experience including at least one rock multi-pitch summit and one glacier summit. We recognize formal training from several organizations, including (but not limited to) the Mazamas, Skagit Climbers, Washington Alpine Club, and American Alpine Institute.
Your previous training must include comprehensive instruction in snow travel techniques (including ice axe arrest), glacier travel, crevasse rescue, and multi-pitch climbing. Please submit a detailed climbing resume highlighting these experiences and your formal training background.
Any questions can be directed to the Basic Equivalency email box expressing interest.
Evaluation Process
The evaluation process consists of a comprehensive skills assessment where candidates demonstrate proficiency in essential climbing techniques. We will evaluate your mastery of standard climbing knots, including but not limited to the rewoven figure 8, prusik knot, alpine butterfly, and münter hitch. You will also demonstrate proper belaying technique with standard climbing commands, and depending on your desired certification level, you may need to demonstrate rappelling skills and crevasse rescue techniques. We are particularly interested in seeing safe, efficient systems that would meet or exceed the standards required of our Basic Climbing Course graduates.
Successful candidates will be granted appropriate badges based on their demonstrated skills and experience level. Some may qualify for full Basic Graduate status, while others might receive specific certifications for Alpine Rock or Glacier Travel. Our evaluation team will provide specific feedback and recommendations for any areas that may need additional development.
Please note that this is an evaluation session, not a training opportunity. Candidates should arrive prepared to demonstrate their current skill level and understanding of safe climbing practices. We encourage you to review our Basic Field Trip curriculum document, a page that documents what is expected of our Basic Climbing students.
If you believe you meet these qualifications and are interested in pursuing Basic Equivalency with The Mountaineers, please submit your climbing resume for initial review. We look forward to learning about your climbing experience and potentially welcoming you into our climbing community.
