Introduction to Multi-Pitch Trad A

Introduction to climbing in a multi pitch environment.

The application period has ended and the course is full.

This course is designed to teach students the skills to complete multi pitch traditional routes at crags. Students will be given time and education to safely and efficiently to lead multi pitch climbs and develop new skills that will ensure they are effective leaders for the multi pitch environment.

This course will cover the following skills:

  • Gear Selection
  • Route selection 
  • Rappelling skills
  • Anchor Building
  • Racking
  • Belay station transitions
  • Belay escape
  • Ascending a rope
  • Exit strategies or "how-to bail"
  • Dealing with environmental factors

Required

  • One set of cams size equivalent to Black Diamond #.3 to #3 (any brand)
  • Full set of nuts (any brand)
  • Helmet
  • Harness
  • Rock shoes
  • 1 personal anchor
  • 6 24 inch (single) alpine slings with 2 wire gate carabiners per sling
  • 2 double length alpine slings with 2 wire gate carabiners per sling
  • 4 locking carabiners
  • Auto blocking guide mode belay device, i.e. Petzl Reverso, Black Diamond ATC Guide
  • Nut tool
  • 20 feet cordalette, 6M nylon, 5M tech cord or spectra
  • Hollow block (Sterling) – either 13.5” or 19”
  • Small daypack to carry water, food and insulation on climbs
Optional:
  • Smaller Camelots optional; Black Diamond X4, Fixe Alien or any other brand  
  • Chalk bag
  • Crack gloves or 2 rolls of climbing tape
