Seattle Basic Glacier Travel Course
Here is the 2020 Course.
This course is designed for those who want to learn the basics of safe glacier travel on snow-covered routes. You'll learn about ice axe use, how to self arrest, roped glacier travel, crevasse rescue techniques, how to rappel and gear selection for camping on snow. This curriculum is in is in concurrence with the snow module of Alpine Basic Course. We warmly welcome all Alpine Scramble and Intermediate snowshoe graduates, though you do not need to be a graduate of these courses to apply. Climbing Glaciers takes good conditioning, good technique and patience. We aim to teach you the skills appropriate to summit spring/summer glaciated peaks in the Pacific NW.
This course does NOT cover glacier ice climbing techniques.
Upon completion of the course, you will be qualified to go on climbs including Mt Rainier, Mt Baker, Ruth Mountain and Icy Peak, and Glacier Peak.
There is an application process to join this course. Please be aware that you must attend a series of workshops and field trips as well as some evening training sessions. Make ups are rare!
