Course Overview

The Wilderness First Responder Recertification Course recertifies a WFR’s medical care skills in remote settings. Students will rebuild skills and confidence needed to provide medical care when evacuation is hours or days away. The course includes group discussions, short lectures, interactive labs, and realistic practice scenarios that allow students to practice and challenge their skills in remote and wilderness settings with limited resources.

The course is taught by instructors from our training partner Remote Medical TrainingIt is intended for individuals holding  current (or within grace period) Wilderness First Responder / W-EMT (wilderness portion only) credentials in need of a renewal. Prior to the start of the course participants will be required to submit proof of existing certification in the form of a  WFR or REMT/WEMT certificate issued within the past 3 years.

This is a "hybrid" course with a mix of online and in-person activities:

  • Activity 1: Approximately 10 - 20 hours of self-paced online training.  Links to the online training will be sent early in the week of October 28, giving students about three weeks to complete the online material before the in-person weekend.
  • Activity 2: A two-day weekend of  in-person training on November 16-17 at the Mountaineers Seattle Program Center

On completion participants will receive the following certifications: Wilderness First Responder (WFR), CPR for the Healthcare Provider, ‘Wilderness’ Certification (for current EMTs only).

This course is not applicable for those who wish to renew a Wilderness First Aid or MOFA certification.

IN-Person Training Weekend

The training weekend on November 16-17 at the Mountaineers Seattle Program Center includes group discussions, short lectures, interactive labs, and realistic practice scenarios that allow students to practice and challenge their skills in remote and wilderness settings with limited resources.

Weather permitting, the weekend will include a mix of indoor and outdoor activities, some of which may take place at alternate venues.  Details vary by class and are determined by weather conditions and the specific interests and availability of the students and instructors.  Each day of training is schedule for 8am to 5pm, but exact times may vary slightly.  Students are advised to reserve extra time before and after the scheduled class times to allow for small changes in the final schedule.

The instructors will communicate gear requirements beforehand, but in general students should expect to come dressed for frequent transitions between indoor and outdoor settings, and should bring the usual kit for their primary activity (day hiking, climbing, scrambling, backpacking, etc.)  Instructors will communicate any specific needs regarding first aid kit and related gear or supplies.

This is a non-residential course.  Students are responsible for their own lodging and transportation.

Important Class Milestones and deadlines

Registration closes at 5:00pm on October 25, three weeks in advance of the In-Person weekend. As per our contract with RMT, we are unable to issue a refund after registration closes.

Before the in-person training weekend participants must have provided to RMT a digital copy (pdf or photo) of their current WFR certificate as described above, and have completed all of the online self-study work.  As per our contract with RMT, students who have not completed the online training or have not provided a copy of their previous WFR certificate will not be able to participate in the in-person training weekend and will not be eligible for a refund.
