To sign up:
Before you can sign up for this Online Map and Compass activity, you first need to sign up and pay for the "Wilderness Navigation Course " (the link to that course is to the right). Instructors do not need to pay.
Please prepare in advance by purchasing your Compass and Map as described on the Course Page (link to the course page is to the right).
This is the first of four activities, and must be completed prior to the second activity, Online Introduction to Digital Navigation. It is required to complete the course, and is not an optional component. There are no prerequisites.
You are allotted 2 weeks to finish this activity. If you cannot finish in that time, please move to a later scheduled Online Map and Compass activity. This will open space for people on the waitlist and help our volunteers manage the course efficiently.
The Online Map and Compass activity provides the foundation for the activities that follow. It is not optional and is not a substitute for other components. Please consider your ability to work independently and set aside the time you'll need to complete this activity (it takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, not including the reading time).
On the start date, you'll receive an email with a link to the CoAssemble Learning Platform. A volunteer instructor will be assigned to help you, to answer questions, etc. You must complete at least 87% of the online activities to be deemed complete. The computer system requirements are listed in the Course Materials tab of the Course Page.
Compass and Maps:
See the Required Equipment tab on the main Course Page. You need an approved compass and a USGS Baring map. Only specific compasses will be accepted, so before purchasing a compass make sure to read our compass requirements.
Rescheduling or cancellation:
If you cannot finish this workshop in the two-week time allotted, please change your registration to a later Online Map and Compass activity. It is best to do so several days before this activity begins, while registration is still open.
We treat this activity the same as any kind of in-person activity. If you don't begin, you'll be marked as a no-show. If you don't finish, you'll be marked as unsuccessful. Please plan your activities so you can dedicate your Online time within your allotted two-week period.
If you begin the Online activities and then change your registration to another date, you will keep your login to the system, and your position in the Online activities, and just have a new completion date for our volunteer instructors to track against. Just remember to complete the online activities prior to your scheduled In-Person Workshop.
You can make changes on your own, prior to the registration close dates, or you can contact the course leader or member services to cancel or change.
INSTRUCTORS:
Your main role will be to answer questions and "mark" or grade certain modules. The activity leader also sets up student logins within the CoAssemble Learning Platform, tracks student's progress, and manages completion.
Required Equipment
Compass with adjustable declination, USGS Baring map, Romer from MapTools.com, or paper printed romer from the Course Materials page.
See the Course Materials tab and Required Equipment tab on the Course page for more details on these items.
