Schedule of activities
Saturday, Dec 9
9-10:30 AM (inside Stevens Lodge): Cover the Basic Snowshoeing field trip curriculum and instructional scenarios.
11 AM-3:30 PM (trip to Grace Lakes): Review the route and practice skills to be taught at the Basic Snowshoeing field trip.
4:30-6:30 PM (inside Stevens Lodge): Social hour and dinner
For those who wish to continue with additional instructor and leader training, there will be an option to stay overnight at Stevens Lodge (capacity: 7 participants). Registering for the training weekend does not automatically reserve an overnight spot. Please contact SuJ'n Chon (mountaineer.su@gmail.com) to request bed space, which is limited due to the lodge being "sold out."
7-8:30 PM (inside Stevens Lodge): 90-minute info session and hands-on group discussion on the prerequisites and process for Becoming a New Snowshoe Trip Leader for the Seattle Snowshoeing program, including leader scenarios.
Sunday, Dec 10
8:30 AM-1:30 PM (trip to Skyline Ridge, dependent on conditions): Review the route and practice skills to be taught at the Intermediate Snowshoeing (aka Backcountry Snowshoe Skills) field trip.
Note for new volunteers: It is not necessary that you believe that you are a full-on expert in all of the skills we teach on the field trips. All new instructors will be paired with an experienced instructor who has taught at the field trip before. You will not be on your own!
This course has no scheduled activities.
Saturday: All gear and supplies required for a typical Basic Snowshoeing trip, including lunch.
If staying overnight: Sleeping bag, toiletries, and personal overnight needs.
Sunday: All gear and supplies required for a typical Intermediate Snowshoeing trip, including lunch. Because we will be doing a lot of self arrest practice, we suggest wearing older pants if you have them and bringing a spare dry shirt and gloves. Helmets are not required but are recommended. We will have some helmets available to borrow for the day.
