Field trip: GoWalk!: Beginner Urban Walking Series

November GoWalk! Urban Walks: 2 to 5 miles, 0 to 450 feet of elevation gain - Magnuson Park

We will walk in a loop around the park to explore the diverse sites and landscape. We will wonder near buildings from days of being a military airfield, to multi-use day fields, to woody-marsh-pond areas, to explore seeming remote isolated fields and including a moment to submarines. The backdrop of this will be views above and at lake level of Lake Washington.

  • Easy
  • Mileage: 2.2 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 30 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 to 2.0 mph

Meet at 5pm for this early evening walk at outside entrance to the Seattle Mountaineers Center, near the climbing tower.  We will be walking at dusk, but should complete before dark.

Loop counter-clockwise generally around the park to explore the diverse sites and landscape. Avoid the dog park areas. Starting at the Mountaineers center, head south between the former miliary residence buildings for a short block. Head east to pass the tennis facility to reach the day-use ball fields. Travel along the road south until reaching woody trails heading east. An option is to head further south to promontory point or  east to the wondering paths in the pond area. The first option can lead to the unique 'Straight Shot' structure. Continue north pass  along Lake Washingtons, on to visit an old magazine  (ordinance) storage area and then onto Kite Hill for 270deg view of Lake Washington. Containing west, the trail passes through woods, a large playfield/running track, near the dog park area and eventually to a large community P-Patch garden. Continuing west pass the former hanger (buildings) used to store aircraft. And then last is our starting point.

Description of  this park/hike can be found in 'Seattle Walks' , by David B. Williams, University of Washington Press.
