Climate Change Speaker Series: The Big Thaw
- Tue, Apr 27, 2021 from 07:00 PM to 08:00 PM
- Carbon Footprint Reduction Committee
- The Mountaineers
- iCal
For the past decade, scientists at the Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) have taken teams of undergraduate researchers to the Arctic to puzzle out just how the changing climate is affecting this enormous carbon reserve—and how it in turn will affect the climate. What they’ve discovered is that the Arctic’s permafrost is thawing fast. The Big Thaw, which won the 2020 Washington State Book Award in General Nonfiction, takes us to the research sites of WHRC’s unique Polaris Project—located first in Cherskiy, Siberia and more recently on Alaska’s remote Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta--to find out how quickly the permafrost is thawing, what its impact will be, and how a new generation of scientists can imagine innovative solutions to global problems.
Speaker: Eric Scigliano, author of The Big Thaw: Ancient Carbon, Modern Science, and a Race to Save the World
About the Climate Change Speaker Series:
The Mountaineers Carbon Footprint Reduction Committee is excited to announce a Climate Change Speaker Series to help our community learn more about the climate crisis. Climate change is an issue that’s on many people’s minds, but it can be overwhelming. In this series, you’ll learn from Mountaineers members and authors about our current climate reality, exciting new science about thawing permafrost, and how climate change will affect the local PNW landscapes we love.
Join us in April, Earth Month, to learn how climate change will affect people and wild places in the Pacific Northwest and beyond - and how you can make a difference. Presentations will be one hour with time for a Q&A after. All events are held via Zoom and open to the public. Join for one event or the series.
