David Moskowitz | Caribou Rainforest: From Heartbreak to Hope
Join David Moskowitz, expert wildlife tracker, photographer, and author, for a unique multimedia event, journeying into the tragically threatened world of mountain caribou—perhaps the most endangered species in the Continental United States. David is author of three books, including his newest, Caribou Rainforest: From Heartbreak to Hope, and has spent years photographing woodland caribou habitat in the world's largest last remaining inland temperate rainforest, and writing about the critical human choices that will ultimately decide the fate of this stunning ecosystem.
David and a small team of adventurers tracked down these rare creatures and documented the world they call home in a new film “Last Stand” released in October 2018. Learn about the many challenges facing these beautiful creatures and globally unique ecosystem and the shifting focus of conservation efforts in the face of 21st century challenges.
Fewer than 10 caribou remain in the herd that crosses back and forth between the United States and Canada in the Pacific Northwest, while the entire population of this endangered species is now less than 1500 across their entire range, which stretches north into Central British Columbia. Through his images and intimate storytelling, he doesn’t identify a lone villain, but rather describes how climate change, settler colonialism, industrial logging, mineral extraction, predators, recreationists, and a confluence of factors have worked against this fragile species and the vulnerable environment upon which it relies. Hear what the loss of this indicator species has to teach us about our relationship to the planet. More about the book and film can be found at www.caribourainforest.org.
