On Thursday, September 26 from 5-9pm you are invited to join us at The Mountaineers Seattle Program Center for a deep dive with many of our 10th edition’s contributors for an evening of presentations, demonstrations and "nerding out" on the many new and updated elements featured in the book. The evening will feature a meet & greet, food, beverages, book signing followed by a short speaking program with Mountaineers and Mountaineers Books staff and volunteers.
The main program will feature Freedom 10 contributors Eric Linxweiler, Steve Swenson, Nathan Foster, Bill Ashby, Takeo Kuraishi, Steve McClure, and Peter Tran, who will be leading demonstrations, and a round-robin-style demo classroom discussing Freedom's new and updated elements. Sessions include:
- Knots & Ropes. Update your essential knowledge for all mountain sport activities by learning how to choose one knot or system over another.
- Climbing Self Rescue. Learn new techniques in crevasse self rescue and compare traditional methods to newer equipment.
- Mountaineering. Learn how to use updated gear items, including spike traction devices, crampons, and ice axes, and hear important new UIAA and AMGA recommendations around mountaineering education and risk management.
- Navigation. Thanks to compasses, cell phones, navigation electronics, and mapping apps, there are many options for navigating in the outdoors. Learn what's new in navigation, the five essential tools you still need, and why paper maps and magnetic compasses may never disappear completely.
- Safety. Learn how to safely explore in the outdoors, from reporting incidents and accidents to safety updates to protocols and risk management.
Mountaineering: The Freedom of the Hills is the most significant guidebook ever published. Born from the handwritten climbing tips of early volunteers of the Seattle-based Mountaineers organization, this fundamental how-to manual has inspired emerging climbers around the globe across nine editions for more than six decades.
Mountaineers Books is proud to present the 10th edition of this master guide, commonly referred to as "Freedom." From planning a weekend backpacking trip to navigating the logistics of a months-long alpine expedition, from tying knots and hitches to essential belaying and rappelling techniques, from setting up camp in the wilderness to summiting glaciated peaks--this comprehensive textbook written by climbers for climbers covers it all.
We look forward to celebrating with you soon!
