Intro to Backpacking Field Trip - Hyas Lake

Preference to Tacoma Branch Introduction to Backpacking Students. Trip will open to all Mountaineers based on availability on April 18. Registered participants must provide leader with proof of vaccination before the trip.

We will meet at the  East Tacoma Dome   Park N Ride,  and be ready to drive to Hyas Lake at 8:00 AM. Car pooling will be allowed for fully vaccinated Covid 19, in spite of the 'open mask' state policy.We will caravan to the parking area at Tucuala Meadows, stopping at the WA DOT Travelers Rest at Snoqualmie Pass.  from there, we will caravan to the trailhead. NW Forest parking pass required for all vehicles. Note: the last few miles will be on un-paved (dirt) roads, expect pot holes in the road. There are 'facilities' at the trailhead.

Registered participants must provide leader with proof of vaccination before the trip.  If you are fully vaccinated I have the ability to assign you the Covid 19 Administrative Badge, if needed.

At the trailhead, we will gather then proceed towards Deception Pass.  We will look for a group campsite alongside the Lake, once found, we will set up camp.

On the way towards home, we may stop at a local 'eatery' to fuel our safe travel home.

  • Tent with footprint/ground tarp
  • Stove and fuel
  • Sleeping bag
  • Sleeping pad
  • Water filter
  • Bear canister
  • Cooking pot/pan with plate and utensils
  • Blue bag to deal with waste
  • Insect repellant
