Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Camp runs from 8:30am-4:30pm each day
- Field Trips: Wednesday and Thursday will be field trip days. Half of the group will go Wednesday and half will go Thursday. The trip will include an easy hike in the North Bend area, where we will focus on nature photography along the way.
- On Friday we meet at Pt. Defiance Park
- Day Camp is for kids age 6-13. Kids will be divided into different counselor groups based on age.
- Teens age 14+ who have outdoor experience are welcome to volunteer! Email sarahh@mountaineers.org for more info.
Where does Camp start and end each day?
Monday - Thursday: Drop-off and pick-up at Tacoma Mountaineers (2302 N 30th St, Tacoma). Please come in the front door.
Friday: Drop-off at the Rustic Picnic Area (near rhododendron garden) at Point Defiance Park, pick-up at Owen Beach at Point Defiance Park.
What does a typical day at Camp look like?
Each day is filled with fun curriculum to teach your camper how to be safe while exploring the outdoors. On the first day of camp, we spend the morning getting to know our campers, playing games, jumping into outdoor skills, and having fun! We will be teaching outdoor curriculum and then introducing arts and crafts that connect to the skills we will learn.
Activities may include: climbing and rope skills, learning to read maps and navigate by compass, wilderness first aid, wildlife safety and identification, and more.
Crafts may include: drawing and painting, mural creation, building 3D topographic maps, crafts made from retired climbing ropes, nature photography and action photography, paper mache, tie-dye, pyrography, and more. Students will get to take home their creations at the end of the camp. We will wrap up our camp at Point Defiance Park on Friday, with a morning hike, a picnic lunch, beach time, games, and awards in the afternoon.
This program has no scheduled activities.
What gear do I need for Camp?
Plan to bring a backpack, athletic closed-toe-shoes, sandals/water shoes for wading, water bottle, lunch, snacks, appropriate clothing for the weather, sunscreen, and whatever else keeps your child happy and healthy. We do ask that you do not send your camper with any electronics or special items that could get lost or left behind throughout the course of camp.
