Summer Camp - Rock & Ropes 1 - Tacoma - 2024

Youth Program

Summer Camp - Rock & Ropes 1

Join us for a week of climbing fun and outdoor learning! 8:30am-4:30pm each day

Kids entering grades 1-7 (ages 6-13) can join us for a 5 adventure filled days ! Kids will have a chance to try rock climbing, hiking, rappelling, navigation, first aid, knots and rope skills, arts and crafts, and basic wilderness skills. This week in particular will focus on an introduction to rock climbing skills. No prior climbing experience is necessary, and each camper can choose the level of challenge they are willing to take on!

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Camp runs from 8:30am-4:30pm each day
  • Each group gets one outdoor climbing field trip: Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday
  • On Friday we meet at Pt. Defiance Park
  • Day Camp is for kids age 6-13. Kids will be divided into different counselor groups based on age.
  • Teens age 14+ who have climbing experience are welcome to volunteer! Email sarahh@mountaineers.org for more info.

Where does Camp start and end each day?

Monday - Thursday: Drop-off and pick-up at Tacoma Mountaineers (2302 N 30th St, Tacoma). Please come in the front door.

Friday: Drop-off at the Rustic Picnic Area (near rhododendron garden) at Point Defiance Park, pick-up at Owen Beach at Point Defiance Park.

What does a typical day at Camp look like?

Each day is filled with fun curriculum to teach your camper how to be safe while climbing and exploring outdoors. On the first day of camp, we spend the morning getting to know our campers, playing games, jumping into outdoor skills, and having fun! On the days we stay at The Mountaineers, we get to go climbing, and learn different types of curriculum (first aid, map and compass, rope skills, using the 10 essentials, and more). On your group’s field trip day, campers will ride in our van out to an outdoor climbing area near North Bend, called “Exit 38” and get to experience climbing on real rock. We will wrap up our camp at Point Defiance Park on Friday, with a morning hike, a picnic lunch, beach time, games, and awards in the afternoon.
