Summer Camp - Survival Skills Week - Tacoma - 2025

Youth Program

Survivor Week

Join us for a week of adventure and outdoor skill-building!

Kids entering grades 1-7 (ages 6-13) join The Mountaineers for 5 days full of adventure! Campers will have a chance to try a variety of outdoor activities, including: climbing, hiking, navigation,  first aid, knots and rope skills, arts and crafts, fire building, shelter building, and other basic wilderness skills.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Camp runs from 8:30am-4:30pm each day
  • Wednesday is our field trip to the Mountaineers property on the Carbon River (we will charter a bus)
  • On Friday we meet at Pt. Defiance Park
  • Day Camp is for kids age 6-13. Kids will be divided into different counselor groups based on age.
  • Teens age 14+ who have climbing and outdoor experience are welcome to volunteer! Email sarahh@mountaineers.org for more info.

Where does Camp start and end each day?

Monday - Thursday: Drop-off and pick-up at Tacoma Mountaineers (2302 N 30th St, Tacoma). Please come in the front door.

Friday: Drop-off at the Rustic Picnic Area (near rhododendron garden) at Point Defiance Park, pick-up at Owen Beach at Point Defiance Park.

What does a typical day at Camp look like?

Each day is filled with fun curriculum to teach your camper how to be safe while exploring the outdoors. On the first day of camp, we spend the morning getting to know our campers, playing games, jumping into outdoor skills, and having fun! On Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, we stay at The Mountaineers and work on climbing and outdoor survival skills, such as first aid, map and compass, rope and rescue skills, using the 10 essentials, fire safety, and more.

Wednesday Field Trip

Our re-imagined field trip day for this week will look a lot different from previous years! We will be taking a bus to our property on the Carbon River, just outside of Mt. Rainier National Park, where we will spend the day practicing our skills in the wild! Activities will include an orienteering course, building shelters from nature, foraging for edible plants, and fire building skills.

What gear do I need for Camp?

Plan to bring a backpack, athletic closed-toe-shoes, sandals/water shoes for wading, water bottle, lunch, snacks, appropriate clothing for the weather, sunscreen, and whatever else keeps your child happy and healthy. We do ask that you do not send your camper with any electronics or special items that could get lost or left behind throughout the course of camp.
