Summer Camp - Water Week - Tacoma - 2024

Youth Program

Water Week

Join us for a week of adventure and outdoor skill-building!

Kids entering grades 1-7 (ages 6-13) join The Mountaineers for 5 days full of adventure! Campers will have a chance to try a variety of outdoor activities, including: kayaking, tide pooling, climbing, hiking, navigation,  first aid, knots and rope skills, arts and crafts,  and other basic wilderness skills.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Camp runs from 8:30am-4:30pm each day
  • Each camper will get a field trip to go kayaking, on either Wednesday or Thursday
  • On Friday we meet at Pt. Defiance Park
  • Day Camp is for kids age 6-13. Kids will be divided into different counselor groups based on age.
  • Teens age 14+ who have outdoor experience are welcome to volunteer! Email sarahh@mountaineers.org for more info.

Where does Camp start and end each day?

Monday - Thursday: Drop-off and pick-up at Tacoma Mountaineers (2302 N 30th St, Tacoma). Please come in the front door.

Friday: Drop-off at the Rustic Picnic Area (near rhododendron garden) at Point Defiance Park, pick-up at Owen Beach at Point Defiance Park.

What does a typical day at Camp look like?

Each day is filled with fun curriculum to teach your camper how to be safe while exploring the outdoors. On the first day of camp, we spend the morning getting to know our campers, playing games, jumping into outdoor skills, and having fun! On Monday and Tuesday, we stay at The Mountaineers and work on outdoor skills, such as first aid, map and compass, climbing and rope skills, using the 10 essentials, and more. This week we will also have a focus on water skills and safety, and we'll be learning about tides and currents, paddling skills and safety, and water focused rescue and first aid skills, such as drowning prevention and treating hypothermia. On Wednesday, half of our campers will get their kayaking field trip, while the other half stays at the Mountaineers, and then we'll swap on Thursday. We will wrap up our camp at Point Defiance Park on Friday, with a morning hike, a picnic lunch, beach time, games, and awards in the afternoon.
